On August 18, 2017, the Senate of the University of Debrecen decided to discern the title of Civis Honoris Causa to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The decision has been justified by the future help of Mr Putin and of the Russian Federation giving a significant role to the University of Debrecen in the nuclear plant project „Paks II”.

The news caused great indignation in university and academic circles, both lecturers and students of Debrecen University protested against the resolution claiming it incompatible with the values of constitutional democracy.

The Lecturers’ Network (OHA) supports all those at the university of Debrecen who reject the Senate’s decision. We strongly believe that the Senate has seriously violated the goodwill of the University of Debrecen by adopting this decision.

We are convinced that a university that adorns a politician who has seriously violated international law and trod down the principles of the rule of law and human rights dishonours its.
